MissionThe mission of the Summer Health Careers Institute is to encourage underrepresented high school students from all regions of the state to pursue a career in health care. By fostering high academic performance, identifying and utilizing available resources, mentoring and enhancing social skills through university-based programs and activities, the institute seeks to facilitate the transition from high school to college and increase the student's potential for successful completion of health professional education. During this seven-day program students from all over the state will come together to explore various medical health professions as well as have the opportunity to tour health care facilities; discuss career options with professors and health practitioners; and shadow a health professional during the trip to the University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz Medical Campus "job shadow day" in Aurora. Health Career Exploration and Education ProgramThis program is funded by a grant from The Colorado Trust foundation and is one of the three goals of the Workforce Initiative. The Colorado AHEC Program provides room and board, meals and all activities at no expense to the students. Housing is at a local college campus dorm setting (Colorado Christian University) with 24-hour supervision by AHEC staff, counselors and volunteers.
