Health Professionals

The citizens of Colorado have been impacted through the unique collaborative efforts of the UCHSC, the five regional AHEC's, and the many community organizations that act as preceptor sites for students, while delivering health care services to the medically under-served, uninsured, immigrant or working poor in both urban and rural Colorado. The schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant and Physical Therapy from the campus of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, as well as schools from across the state diligently provide the educational environment.

Partnering with the community health care agencies of all types they support the clinical practice and experience to develop competent providers, researchers and educators. Over 900 students are supported in the special rotations offered through the AHEC system in rural and under-served populations in Colorado annually. By coordinating efforts across the state, we have provided the most efficient and cost-effective housing, travel and preceptor connection for the health care students.

Also...NHSC Demonstration Pilot Program

The Health Care Safety Net Amendments reauthorize the NHSC also authorized a demonstration pilot project to allow for participation of pharmacists and chiropractors in the NHSC/LRP.

Click here for Colorado counties with NHSC Providers

The NHSC is planning to implement this demonstration pilot in FY 03. In order to do this we must quickly identify sites that wish to participate. The legislation requires that a health professional licensed to prescribe drugs must provide NHSC obligated service at a site concurrently as the chiropractor/ pharmacist who would participate in the pilot. However, nothing in this section should be construed to 1) require such health professionals to supervise the chiropractor or pharmacist or 2) to supercede State licensure laws.

Please forward to Ssalter@hrsa.gov, contact information for any sites that currently have NHSC clinicians licensed to prescribe drugs, and who have a desire to recruit or retain a pharmacist or chiropractor using the NHSC LRP. Additional information on these pilots will be sent as it becomes available.

For further local information contact Kitty Stevens with the Primary Care office (303-692-2582) or Mr. Monte Roulier, Region VIII NHSC Representative, at 970-663-6200
